If you look at a close-up picture of a steel bridge or a steel building frame, you'll see rows of rounded bumps, sort of like small balls sticking out of the steel. These are rivets and they join 2 pieces of steel together. They are round, smooth bolts with the 'ball' on top and are pushed through 2 lined-up holes in 2 pieces of steel than then squashed flat with hammers on the underside. They are like nuts and bolts, but much stronger. The thing is, though, that the rivets have to be hot in order to install them.
